June 2, 2008 – 4:30 pmQuito, Ecuador is a popular South American travel destination. Quito is the second largest city in Ecuador, and has a population of 1,250,000. One of the most unique features of Quito is that it’s located over 9,000 feet in the Andes mountains. This offers quite a few, and if you have a strong heart, you won’t be too freaked out by the proximity of Quito to Mt. Pichincha, a volcanic mountain which began spewing ash recently.

Quito is known for its’ Colonial charm.
Cobblestone roads and rich stone structures bely Quito’s Colonial past. There’s a lot of carefully preserved history in Quito, Ecuador, which is nearly always appreciated by the tourists who flock to the city each year. Quito’s Old Town features building dated from as far back as the 1500s.
But there’s also plenty to do for modern travelers. A number of people travel to Quito just to learn Spanish, as the city is home to a great number of Spanish language schools. Many people make sure to visit the “New Town” in Northern Quito, or Norte de Quito.
In this area you can visit Parque Carolina and Parque Metropolitana, two beautiful and major national parks. If you’re from the United States, you’ll probably notice the pronounced American influence on the buildings in this area, from restaurants through hotels.

- Danger from violence or kidnapping near the Columbian border
