Hawaii Tourism At A Discount

October 2, 2008 – 3:09 pm

This could be the year to go to Hawaii during the winter months, because trips there are being offered at a serious discount. At the current time, travel packages to Hawaii are $200 to $900 less than they were one year ago.

Hawaii is in the midst of its worst tourism downturn in years.

In August, visitor spending in Hawaii dropped $206.9 million from the same month last year, while air arrivals fell by 107,000.

The HVCB is spending $4.5 on the winter campaign, with $1.5 million coming from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and $1.6 million from hotels and other industry members.

Due to the downturn, you can expect more ads and travel packages to Hawaii this year. Tourism is a big part of the Hawaiian economy, and officials don’t plan on giving up easily.

Party In Rio de Janeriro

May 7, 2008 – 5:36 pm

Get into the Festive Mood in Rio de Janeiro Now!

In most parts of the world when we say Carnival or Carnaval one thinks of rides, games and elephant ears. A carnival is like having a circus come to your town. Parents bring their children to enjoy the Carousel, Ferris Wheel and Bumper Cars and play games of skill and chance to win stuffed toys and other prizes.

The definition of Carnival or ‘Carnaval’ in Brazil is way different to what we are used to. Their Carnaval does not consist of rides and games but instead it’s made up of several parades that are done 40 days before Easter. Their Carnaval is very festive as it is a combination of lots of sounds, music, and dancing. Every street in Rio de Janeiro is full of people watching the Carnaval. It started as a masked ball in the 1840s and later on morphed into a parade that included floats and costumed revelers.

The Carnaval is usually a four day event that starts on a Saturday and ends on a Fat Tuesday or what they call ‘Mardi-Gras.’ Fat Tuesday is celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday - the beginning of
Lent. There are different types of parades held at different locations - each parade has their own name depending on where they are held.

Travel Industry Needs Fingerprints

April 22, 2008 – 8:45 am

Ever since 9/11, Uncle Sam has been as tough on the tourism industry as he’s been on terrorists. The latest initiative, which would call for “all foreigners” leaving the United States to give “digital fingerprints” has many industry leaders saying “enough is enough”.

The proposal does not say where airlines must collect fingerprints — at airport check-in counters, departure gates or kiosks somewhere in between. But the government estimates the undertaking will cost airlines $2.3 billion over 10 years, a U.S. homeland security official said.

The overall economic impact on companies, passengers and the government is expected to exceed $3.5 billion, industry lobbyists said, at a time when carriers are struggling with safety concerns, high fuel costs and passenger complaints.

Travel execs are not only worried about additional costs, many are expressing concern about how the fingerprinting will cause interminable delays at already slow moving airports. The proposal has now entered a 60 day comment period, where many voices will weigh in on the initiative.

Toronto Named Best ‘Convention City’ In Canada

April 17, 2008 – 10:03 am

Today there’s some good news for Toronto, Canada. The bustling city was recently named as the best
city to hold a convention in Canada.

Watkins Research Group Meeting and Convention Planners is behind the study that found the home of the CN tower rules supreme for business meetings.

“Competition for high-value meeting business is more global than ever,” said David Whitaker, President and CEO of Tourism Toronto. “Meeting planners recognize that Toronto is well-positioned as an international meeting place and the city’s untold story is gaining wider profile.”

In order to live up to the high expectations of business travelers, Toronto has done a number of upgrades and expansions. Metro Toronto Convention Centre completed a $4-million upgrade to the pre-function space outside Constitution Hall, Direct Energy Centre is planning a major expansion to create a Conference Centre with 58,500 square feet of ballrooms and 22,500 square feet of meeting rooms, Toronto Congress Centre reopened in January after undertaking a massive expansion to double its exhibition space to more than one million square feet. International Centre is adding an $11.5-million Conference Centre in summer 2008 to enhance its existing half-million square feet of exhibit and meeting facilities.

Toronto can be reached by air, rail and car. Mississauga is a nearby suburb that’s within an hour drive.
